How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend having your tires rotated every 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles at a trusted service center. This is a good rule of thumb, but can vary depending on your vehicle and driving habits. It’s always a good idea to check the owner’s manual of your new or used VW for the exact interval, so you can keep your car’s tires and wheels in good condition. Learn more about when to rotate tires and more below!

Tire Rotation for FWD and RWD Cars

What’s the difference between front-wheel and rear-wheel drive cars? The main difference is where power from the engine is transferred. The transmissions inside front-wheel drive cars deliver power to the front axle, while those in rear-wheel drive cars deliver power to the rear axle. Whichever set of tires gets the majority of the engine’s power will wear more quickly. Keep the following pointers in mind if you own a FWD or RWD car:

  • Regular rotations are needed every 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles for FWD or RWD vehicles, Again, check your owner’s manual for exact miles.
  • FWD vehicles follow a specific tire rotation pattern. Flip sides when moving the rear tires to the front; the rear right tire should be moved to the front left. If you’re moving the front tires to the back, keep them on same sides.
  • Invert the process above for RWD cars. When moving the front tires to the bank, flip sides, but keep the rear tires on the same sides when moving them forward.
  • Your driving habits will affect the wear patterns of your tires, and may cause you to need tire rotation sooner. If you off-road around Des Plaines or Glenview, for example, talk to our service experts about the right tire rotation schedule for you.

AWD Tire Rotation: What to Keep in Mind

Wondering how many miles to rotate tires on your AWD car? The intervals aren’t quite the same as those for a RWD or FWD car. Tire rotation is recommended every 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles for AWD vehicles. These are general numbers to live by; the numbers may be different in your owner’s manual. If you car is due for a tire rotation, schedule a service visit at The Autobarn Volkswagen of Mt. Prospect. We’ll check for worn tires and perform a rotation. Usually, rotation is in order once the tread variance is more than 2/32 of an inch.

Why Rotate Tires?

Common knowledge will tell you tire rotation keeps your tires in good shape and prevents uneven wear. Beyond that, regular tire rotation gives you the peace of mind of the following:

  • Extended tire life
  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Quieter ride
  • Less unnecessary stress on the drivetrain
